2011 JazzSea Panama Cruise

On Jan.2, 2011 my wife, Nida, and I boarded the Celebrity Constellation for our 13 day cruise from San Diego, California, through the Panama Canal, ending up in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. There was good weather, good ports of call - and great music!

I performed my solo concert halfway through the cruise in the beautiful "Reflections" Nightclub, with piano accompaniment by Karla West. In my show, I also included a guest singer, named Jesse DeTorres, for his outstanding version of Al Jolson's "Mammy". For my finale, my clarinet friend from Florida, Dr. Bob Felman, accompanied me on the Wm. Tell Overture.

Meanwhile, everyday I conducted and rehearsed the Banjos Aweigh band in preparation for their concert which we played towards the end of the cruise with great success.

Every year the band consists of different members, amateur players from all over North America and Europe. This year, the 27 members consisted mostly of banjos, but there was also a tuba, clarinet, violin, ukulele, mandolin, gut-bucket, washboards, spoons, a vocalist, and 4 dancers. These players just want to have fun while learning how to play. I even offered lessons while on board.

I also was asked to play with 2 other bands, Toronto's "Climax Jazz Band" and "Tex Williams And Friends". What fun!

Next year, the JazzSea Caribbean cruise will leave Ft. Lauderdale for an 11 day trip on Holland-America's Maasdam. For more information, please check out www.jazzsea.com.

2010 JazzSea 10 day Caribbean Cruise

The 2010 JazzSea Caribbean Cruise was another memorable success. This year we boarded the brand new Celebrity Equinox in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and cruised to St. Thomas, Barbados, St. Kitts, Dominica, and St. Maarten, returning to Ft. Lauderdale after 10 days of good music and mostly calm seas.

I performed my solo concert with banjo and guitar along with piano accompanist, Karla West.

The next day, I conducted the Banjos Aweigh banjo band as they performed their concert with 30 musicians playing and singing their hearts out to a packed audience.

I conducted and rehearsed Banjos Aweigh - all amateur musicians - for a week before their concert and they sounded great within a day or two. The band consisted of tenor and plectrum banjos, tuba, trombone, clarinet, violin,piano, drums, washboards and spoons, gut-bucket, harmonicas, as well as a musical saw! We even had 3 lovely singers, the “Elegant Sweethearts”, on microphone to help with the sing along.

Glacier Jazz Festival, Oct. 2 & 3, 2009

I played a few shows at the beginning of October at the annual Glacier Jazz Festival in Kalispell, Montana. The music coordinator for the festival is Karla West whom you can see playing piano in the following photo. Karla is the leader of the "Rocky Mountain Rhythm Kings". I had fun playing with her band as well as some of the other featured bands at the festival. I also had my own concerts in which Karla accompanied me.

Germany Concerts, May 2009

I returned to Germany for my annual concerts in Pforzheim, as well as a concert and banjo workshop near Munich.

In the photo above, I had invited Rainer Daub, the Pforzheim concert organizer, to perform "Dueling Banjos".

After Pforzheim, Nida and I drove to Fuessen Germany, near Munich, to see King Ludwig's famous castle in one of the prettiest parts of Germany.

In the Munich area, I performed a concert which was organized by Hans Dengler, leader of the Munich Banjoband, some of whom are seen in the photo below, when I invited them to play during the concert.

Hans Dengler, seen in the picture with me and Nida, also arranged a banjo workshop for the following day.

Tim Allan’s “Banjos Aweigh” On The 2009 JazzSea Cruise

It was very smooth cruising with the 2009 JazzSea Caribbean cruise aboard Holland America’s “M.S. Statendam”, from January 3 to 10. There was lots of music to hear and to play, plus great weather in various islands - all in 7 days of fun.

These annual January cruises allow musicians to play in an organized atmosphere as well as in informal jam sessions. There were 4 popular trad. jazz bands onboard, from the U.S. and Canada, as well as a “Jammers” band, led by Dick Williams, aimed at offering playing time to mostly horn players. The Banjos Aweigh band, which I conduct, is composed of banjo players along with horns, piano, drums, and washboards, all of whom are novices. It is amazing how quickly these band members catch on and produce listenable music, starting and finishing each song very cleanly. By the way, half of these band members had my “Banjos Aweigh Song Book” along with their music stands to help them get through each hour-long performance.

I also offered private lessons on various stringed instruments and brought along some new helpful banjo books and CDs that I had recently produced. My 2 different tenor banjo chord-diagrammed song books were popular with the tenor players, and my “Play Along-Practice Trax” book/CD combo, containing 22 banjo band songs, proved to be popular with all instruments.

Alaska JazzSea Cruise - July 25 - Aug. 1/08

The 7-day Alaskan JazzSea cruise proved to be an adventure, as a tourist and as a musician. The "Banjos Aweigh" band, which I conducted, was smaller than usual, but still entertained a packed "Hudson Room" venue. The "Buck Creek" jazz band was making its penultimate appearance on this cruise, with its final appearance on the Jan.3/09 Caribbean JazzSea cruise. They were missing their banjo player, so I happily sat in on a few occasions.

One of our Alaskan stops took us humpback whale watching (see photo I took) and another stop allowed us to see a calving glacier, The Marjerie Glacier, in Glacier Bay. Our final port, before Seattle, was Victoria, B.C., where some of us musicians skipped over to "Hermann's" jazz club for a few songs.(See top photo). It was lots of fun!

Pforzheim, Germany, May 30 and 31/08

It was a fun 2 nights for me at the Bottich-Rathskeller in downtown Pforzheim. Rainer Daub, the organizer of my concerts, came up to the stage to play a few songs with me, including "Dueling Banjos". In the audience I was happy to see friends from nearby Sinsheim, including Gabi and Dierk Frerichs, the banjo collector who sold his huge collection to the Banjo Museum in Oklahoma. I was also pleased to meet Hans Dengler, the organizer of the newly-formed Munich Banjo Club, who drove all the way to Pforzheim for my concert.

New Song Arrangement Book and CD

I've just prepared a new 42 song arrangement book, specially prepared for tenor banjo players. Above every note of each song I have placed a tenor banjo Chord Diagram, indicating the precise fingering and location of the chord. To help the stuent learn the songs, I have also prepared a companion CD with all 42 songs recorded on solo tenor banjo at a slow tempo, so that each required chord can be heard clearly. This is my second volume of Easy Reading Song Arrangements. Just look down the merchandise column on the right.

January 2008 JazzSea Caribbean Cruise

The 10-day 25th Anniversary JazzSea Caribbean Cruise, returned to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on January 15, 2008 with many great musical memories, along with photos of some of the prettiest islands in the Caribbean. This cruise was so popular, that the entire Holland-America ship, M.S. Maasdam, had been filled with JazzSea enthusiasts.

It was Tim's pleasure once again to conduct the “Banjos Aweigh” pick-up band, made up of around 40 non-professional musicians and enthusiasts, ready to practice and learn a 45 minute concert repertoire. In the band there were men and women from the U.S.A. and Canada, as well as the Scottish banjo player, Michael Hart, the director of the Edinburgh International Jazz and Blues Festivals

The band predominantly consists of banjo players, with a tuba or bass player in the mix. They have usually been lucky enough to find a good pianist and horn player or two, as well as fiddlers and harmonica players. To add rhythm and humor to the gathering, they have added washboards, spoons, and sometimes a “gutbucket”. Tim welcomes any level of banjo playing ability, and he will try to include most other instruments into the band. Tim never knows who the musical surprises will be until they begin the cruise, so Tim tries to make the concert songlist relatively simple, to accommodate various levels of performance. In fact, to further simplify matters, Tim now has the full concert printed up in booklet form, “The Banjos Aweigh Songbook”, so that participants, who cannot play by ear alone, will be able to read the music during performances. Some prospective band members will even order their songbook well in advance of their cruise, just to be prepared. It ends up being a great learning experience for novices. NOVEMBER 2 - BUFFALO BANJO BAND's 40th Anniversary

Tim performed for the Buffalo Banjo Band's 40th Anniversary held at the Buffalo Launch Club on Grand Island , NY. Various band members sang and played throughout the happy evening. There were honors bestowed upon original founding members, including Bob Werner, shown here singing a crowd favorite called "Egyptianella".

SEPTEMBER and OCTOBER 2007 - LOVE GURU MOVIE

Through the fall of 2007, Tim provided 5-string banjo and guitar coaching to two actors in a movie called "The Love Guru", to be released in June 2008. Mike Myers, who comes from Toronto, wrote and produced this film, as well as acting in it. He plays the part of an Indian Guru who helps an American hockey team overcome its losing streak by using love. The movie was filmed in Toronto and used some of Toronto’s scenery as its sets. Since the Guru is supposed to be from India, a beach area just east of Toronto was set up to be an Indian village. (See photo)

Naturally, many of the extras had to be of East Indian descent. One of the musical costars, Manu Narayan, has Indian parents, but he was born in Pittsburgh. Manu had to learn 5-string banjo in two weeks for his scene in the finale of the movie, which was being filmed on the beach at the “Scarborough Bluffs”. Tim was hired by the music director, John Hoolihan, to coach Manu on the 5-string banjo first, then later on, the guitar. This young musician picked up both instruments very quickly, and was able to “dub” in his musical parts with much confidence and believability.(See photo) Another performer, Robert Schneider, also had some on-set banjo coaching from Tim in a "bar" scene.

To top it off, the young starlet, Jessica Alba, plays the Guru’s love interest. Tim's two sons , who are in their twenties, were especially envious of his proximity to this popular actress. Here's a shot of Jessica Alba with Mike Myers in his "Guru" costume.

May 2007, Pforzheim, Germany

Tim was invited back to Pforzheim, Germany in May of 2007, for 2 nights of concerts at the Bottiche, Rathskeller. Each May, Tim starts his European tour by performing at this club in downtown Pforzheim. The following photo shows Tim performing with an antique tenor banjo, a Bacon & Day #9, borrowed from a German friend, Dr. Dierk Frerichs. In the second photo, the same banjo is being played by the concert organizer, Rainer Daub, while Tim joins him with guitar.

February 2007, JazzSea Cruise, Mexican Riviera

In February, 2007, the JazzSea Cruise left from San Diego, California, on a 10-day Mexican Riviera cruise aboard the M.S.Ryndam. The ship traveled past Baja California as far as Puerta Vallarta, then returned with stops at many ports along the way. This photo shows Tim and his wife, Nida, at one of the formal dinners.

Tim performed his mainstage concerts and conducted the Banjos Aweigh banjo band for their mainstage finale concert. Tim also provided lessons for a variety of stringed instruments while onboard.

TIM SINGS WITH BURKE SEITZ - Sept. 2006

In September, 2006, in Toronto, Tim had the pleasure to play and sing "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise", along with the Burke Seitz, the son of the song's composer, Ernest Seitz. Tim had met the Seitz family in Toronto years before, when Tim was performing this song for the opening ceremonies of a small park called "Sunrise Park". The location of this park is behind the building in Toronto where Ernest Seitz was living when he wrote this song in the early 1900s. The song is a mainstay in any jazz banjo player's repertoire, and was honored as such, at the Banjo Hall Of Fame Museum in Guthrie, Oklahoma earlier in 2006.

Europe May/June 2006

In May and June 2006, Tim performed again in Pforzheim, Germany where he also provided a guitar workshop at Musikhaus Steinbrecker. In early June, Tim then performed near Zurich, Switzerland, at a 2-day BanjoFest organized by the famous Swiss banjoist, Ruedi Bleuer, where Tim closed off each day’s concert. Tim also offered a banjo workshop for the banjoists from almost every country in Europe.

Tim and his wife, Nida, continued their tour and found themselves in southern Spain. The accompanying photo shows Tim in Granada, playing a street busker’s guitar, with the Alhambra Palace in the background.

January 2006 JazzSea Cruise

The January 2006 JazzSea Cruise toured the southern Caribbean on the M.S. Volendam with Tim once again performing as well as conducting the Banjos Aweigh banjo band, and giving workshops and lessons.
